Introduction to File System Management in Operating System:
Definition and Explanation:
A file system organizes the storage of information including data and programs for the
system and users. It consists of two distinct parts:
The groupings of information for the users in files
Additional information that describes these groupings or directory structure.
A file is a collection or grouping of bytes. The file system (FS) provides a uniform logical view of the information storage. The information is organized in terms of files mapped onto the underlying physical device(s). The storage is usually non-volatile e.g. disk, flash memory, etc. A file is the smallest element of information that can be recorded in the file system. Information can be saved in the storage system in the form of a file.
