Definition and Explanation:
Handshaking is a technique used for controlling the movement of data between system components. For example before am I/O module sends data to the CPU it must make sure that the CPU is ready to receive that data. On the other hand if the CPU wants to send data to a particular device it must make sure the data was received before sending other data. Almost all system components have control lines used for handshaking.
In general these are called Acknowledge Control Lines.
After a read or write operation to an I/O module, for example, the R/W ACKN line is raised to tell the CPU that the operation was carried out. An advantage of handshaking is that it allows fast and slow devices to be accommodated on the same system bus.
